In truth I did not read this whole page of text intermixed
with photos and videos. The page layout was too distracting, the left side
would stay still while the right side moved and my eyes were being drawn to the
right side of the page even if I was currently reading the left side. Anyway, I
am choosing to focus on ‘Language of lol’. The writer says that everyone knows
what ‘lol’ stands for. But honestly I knew some people who thought lol stood
for ‘lots of love’ instead of ‘laughing out loud’. Also the infamous ‘smh’ could
stand for ‘smack my head’ (face palm) or ‘shake my head’ (for shame).
She also says that the shorting of language that has occurred throughout the computer age can be seen as a 'necessary evolution'. I do not agree with her in the least I fee as though these words are taking away something human in us and replacing it with written words. I caught myself the other day saying the word sigh out loud rather than actual sighing. It was very weird when I noticed myself doing that. Also reading the shortened words is sometimes hard to understand and are a pain, it doesn't hurt to spell out the words people use.
Another thing I would like to bring up which may or may not be relevant to the topic at hand is that children are being introduced to technology at such a young age and with the shorting of words may pick up poor spelling habits. (I was taught how to type on a computer in the third grade, my spelling is horrendous. Thank God for Spellcheck)
